If one listens to the average therapy simp, everyone should be in therapy.
They’ll claim it helps people understand things like other people exist and have feelings, too. Nobody would doubt that’s an important thing to understand, but many of us would contest that it requires a therapist to understand that. Nearly all of their justifications betray an alarming lack of self-awareness.
According to them, therapists are like hairdressers, universally-beneficial, except when they’re not. It’s a unique take, possible only by people who have been to therapy and failed to learn anything while there.
If you disagree, you’re likely to be angrily typed at in ALL CAPS, told that you’re a monster, downvoted, have your posts removed, and perhaps even banned.
Fortunately, these stories are gaining traction outside of minor blogs and subreddits, with the mainstream media is starting to pick up on this.
A recent piece in The Atlantic, titled Not Everyone Needs to Go To Therapy, looks research by Dr. Lucy Foulkes of Oxford, which looked at the undifferentiated, shotgun approach to “mental health awareness”.
Like a hairdresser who gives everyone the same haircut, of course it’s not a good fit for many - perhaps even most.
